PlayStation Game Case Sizes

PS2 Game Case Size & Color
In the year 2000, Sony released the PS2. The PlayStation 2 uses primarily DVD as well as CD-ROM as it’s media type. The jewel cases are larger than it’s predecessor and come in a range of colors but predominantly Blue, Black & Grey.
PSP Game Case Size & Color
The PlayStation Portable (PSP) was Sony’s first handheld console and was released in 2004. The console utilized a new proprietary optical storage medium known as Universal Media Disc (UMD). The jewel case that houses it, is smaller than the PS2 and are usually transparent.
PS3 Game Case Size & Color
The PS3 was launched in 2006. The PlayStation 3 primarily uses Blu-Ray as it’s main media source and is also compatible with DVD, CD and Super Audio CD. The PS3 jewel case is smaller than the PS2 case, similar in size to traditional Blu-Ray cases. They are generally transparent.
PS Vita Game Case Size & Color
In 2011, Sony released their 2nd generation handheld console, the PlayStation Vita. The PS Vita utilizes a flash memory card called PlayStation Vita game card rather than UMDs. The PS Vita game jewel cases are blue in color and are smaller than it’s predecessor.
PS4 Game Case Size & Color
2013 saw the release of the PlayStation 4. The PS4 was compatible with both Blu-Ray and DVD media types, CD was no longer supported. PS4 game cases are the same dimensions as PS3 jewel cases but are now transparent blue in color.
PS5 Game Case Size & Color
The PlayStation 5 was released in 2021. The PS5 was available as a digital only or base model. The base model is compatible with Ultra HD Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray & DVD media discs. The PS5 jewel case has the same dimensions as the PS4, and retains it’s transparent Blue color.
Nintendo Game Case Sizes

You may have noticed that the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 & Gameboy absent from the table. The reason being that they utilized cartridges, which were not packaged in plastic jewel cases.
GameCube Game Case Size & Color
Moving on to the GameCube, it was released in 2001 as Nintendo’s first optical disc console. The GameCube Game Disc measures 8cm and has a storage capacity of 1.46 GB. The disc case is usually black in color and often contains a memory card slot.
Nintendo DS Game Case Size & Color
In 2004 the Nintendo DS (NDS or DS) was introduced, which utilizes a flash storage card called the Nintendo DS Game Card. These cards come in a range of capacities, from 64mb to 4gb. DS games are packaged in black boxes (15mm wide) or transparent boxes (20mm wide) and often contain a slot for Gameboy Advanced cartridges.
Nintendo Wii Game Case Size & Color
In 2006, the Nintendo Wii was launched, featuring its own unique Wii Optical Disc format based on DVD technology. The console is also compatible with smaller GameCube Game Discs. Nintendo Wii game cases are typically white and have the same size as standard DVD cases.
Nintendo 3DS Game Case Size & Color
The Nintendo 3DS was introduced in 2011, as the successor to the Nintendo DS. Similar to its predecessor, the 3DS utilizes a flash storage card. However, the 3DS game card cannot be used with earlier DS, DS Lite, or DSi consoles, although the 3DS can play earlier DS and DSi games. In Japan and America, 3DS games are packaged in white cases that are 12mm in width, whereas in Europe, they are typically black and slightly wider at 14mm.
Nintendo Wii U Game Case Size & Color
In 2012, the Wii U was released as the direct successor to the Wii. The Wii U employs an optical disc that closely resembles Blu-Ray technology. While it can play Wii games, it is not compatible with GameCube discs. Wii U game case dimensions are identical to those of the Wii, but the Wii U jewel case features a blue/cyan coloration.
Nintendo Switch Game Case Size & Color
In 2017, the Nintendo Switch was launched, utilizing non-volatile flash memory cards that bear resemblance to SD cards. The Nintendo Switch game card can store up to 64 GB of data. As for the Nintendo Switch game cases, they are typically transparent in color.
SEGA Game Case Sizes

Sega Master System Game Case Size & Color
The Sega Master System, an 8-bit console, was launched in Japan in 1985. It utilized ROM cartridges and was the first gaming system to package games in a jewel case, which was black with a hang tab on top.
Sega Genesis Game Case Size & Color
Six years later, in 1991, Sega introduced the Mega Drive/Genesis 16-bit console with its own unique ROM cartridge. Like the Master System, the Mega Drive game case was black with a hang tab on top.
Sega Mega CD Game Case Size & Color
The Mega CD, an accessory for the Mega Drive, was also released in 1991. Initially, Mega CD games came in a regular CD jewel case. However, Sega America later introduced larger custom jewel cases with a transparent front and black spine. Sega Japan and Europe continued to use the regular-sized CD packaging.
Sega Pico Game Case Size & Color
In 1993, Sega launched the Pico, an educational video game console aimed at young children. Sega Pico games came in cartridge format and were packaged in a unique plastic keep case, which was white in color.
Sega 32X Game Case Size & Color
In 1994 Sega launched the 32X, and add-on for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis console. It utilized Super 32X ROM cartridges and also allowed the use of CD-ROMs with the Sega Mega CD.
Sega Saturn Game Case Size & Color
That same year, the Sega Saturn was launched. Sega Saturn games utilized CD-ROM format and the same CD jewel case as the Mega CD.
Sega Dreamcast Game Case Size & Color
The Dreamcast, which was released in 1998, used GD-ROM discs similar to CDs but with slightly larger storage capacity of 1 GB and added piracy protection. The Dreamcast game case dimensions and appearance were similar to audio CDs.
Sega Advanced Pico Beena Game Case Size & Color
In 2005, Sega released the Advanced Pico Beena, a successor to the Pico. The Beena was an educational-based console that was only available in Japan. Although it has never been officially discontinued, there have not been any new games released since 2011. The Advanced Pico Beena games were in cartridge format.
Xbox Game Case Sizes

Original Xbox Game Case Size & Color
Microsoft launched the original Xbox in 2001, featuring compatibility with both DVD and CD-ROM formats. Original Xbox games were packaged in lime green DVD-sized cases.
Xbox 360 Game Case Size & Color
The Xbox 360, introduced in 2005 as a successor to the original Xbox, it competed with the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii. It supported DVD, CD, and HD DVD playback with an additional drive. The game cases for the Xbox 360 were the same size as those for the original Xbox but were housed in transparent green keep cases.
